SpaceX finds eager buyers for its debt, even as its new stock listing whipsaws
Barely two weeks after its blockbuster stock market debut, SpaceX is testing just how much enthusiasm investors have for one of the world’s most closely watched companies. The early answer appears to be: quite a lot.
The company’s new bond sale, launched this week at at least $25 billion, drew roughly $85 billion in orders, a sign that demand for SpaceX extends well beyond the frenzy that surrounded its June 12 Nasdaq listing. Days later, Nasdaq said the company would be added to the Nasdaq-100 on July 7 under a new fast-track rule for very large newly public companies, a move likely to force billions of dollars of buying by index funds and exchange-traded funds that track the benchmark.
Yet the rush of money into both SpaceX debt and stock comes with a striking counterpoint: the company’s shares have already been volatile in their first days of trading, swinging sharply as investors try to settle on what the company is worth and how much future spending they are willing to finance.
Together, the developments capture the central tension surrounding SpaceX’s public-market arrival. Investors remain eager to fund the company across capital markets, but the price of that optimism — and the risks attached to it — is still being worked out in real time.
A huge debt sale meets huge demand
The scale of the bond offering underscored how much latitude large investors are still willing to give SpaceX. Proceeds are expected to go largely toward refinancing a bridge loan, while also supporting general corporate needs connected to the company’s artificial intelligence buildout and broader expansion plans.
That order book, however, does not erase concerns about what comes next. Analysts have pointed to the risks that often accompany large, heavily subscribed bond sales: growing capital expenditures, the possibility of more refinancing down the road, and concentration among investors who may all have crowded into the same trade.
In practical terms, the strong reception means lenders are comfortable, for now, with SpaceX’s need for cash. But it also highlights the scale of the company’s ambitions. SpaceX raised about $75 billion in its initial public offering at $135 a share, and Nasdaq later said the listing brought in $85.7 billion overall. Turning so quickly to debt markets only reinforces that investors expect substantial spending ahead.
For a company pursuing expensive infrastructure and AI-related projects, access to both equity and debt financing is a strategic advantage. It may also become a test of discipline if borrowing and spending continue to accelerate.
Fast entry into the Nasdaq-100
If the bond sale showed confidence from credit investors, Nasdaq’s decision to add SpaceX to the Nasdaq-100 so soon after its debut showed how rapidly the company has become central to public markets.
The inclusion was made possible by a Nasdaq methodology change that took effect May 1, allowing very large new listings to qualify for “Fast Entry” after their seventh trading day if they rank among the top 40 constituents by full market capitalization. SpaceX is among the first major beneficiaries of that rule.
The practical effect is straightforward: funds that track the Nasdaq-100 will need to buy the stock. That creates a fresh source of demand at a moment when the publicly tradable float remains relatively constrained, a setup that can amplify price moves in either direction.
Some investors view such index inclusion as a stabilizing force because it broadens the shareholder base and locks in long-term passive holders. Others see it as a short-term technical boost that can temporarily push the stock higher without resolving more basic questions about valuation or future earnings power.
Volatility tests the faithful
SpaceX’s first two weeks as a public company have already shown how quickly sentiment can shift. After the excitement of its record listing, the shares have lurched as investors weigh supply dynamics, valuation and the prospect of future insider-share releases.
That turbulence has been especially striking because it is unfolding at the same time as extraordinary institutional demand. In theory, a company attracting this much money in bonds and poised for major passive inflows in equities might be expected to trade more smoothly. Instead, its stock has become a vivid example of how price discovery can remain unstable even when investor appetite is unquestioned.
Part of the reason is structural. A stock with a limited float can move sharply when demand is concentrated and when expectations are unusually high. Another factor is more cultural: Elon Musk’s companies tend to inspire both intense loyalty and intense skepticism, making them especially prone to big swings as narratives change.
Investors are now trying to determine whether those swings are simply the normal aftershocks of a giant listing, or an early warning about the difficulty of sustaining such a rich market value while funding expansive future plans.
The broader space economy keeps pulling workers in
The market turbulence around SpaceX has not dimmed the appeal of the space sector more broadly. Hiring across the U.S. space economy has remained resilient even as other parts of the labor market have cooled, suggesting that enthusiasm for the industry extends beyond trading screens.
Census figures published in January showed that the sector continues to attract younger workers; nearly half of new hires in 2024 were under 35. That matters because it points to a deeper base of confidence in space-related industries, from engineering to manufacturing to data and software, even when investor sentiment toward any one company turns erratic.
In that sense, SpaceX’s debut is both a company story and a sector story. The stock may fluctuate sharply, but the labor market and capital flowing into space-related businesses suggest that long-term interest in the field remains intact.
Why this matters now
What makes this moment important is not simply that SpaceX can raise enormous sums of money. It is that the company is doing so across multiple fronts at once, while the market is still struggling to agree on how to value it.
The bond sale suggests that creditors are willing to fund a large spending agenda. The Nasdaq-100 inclusion is likely to deliver another wave of forced buying from passive funds. But neither development settles the bigger questions hanging over the company: how much cash it will consume, how heavily it may need to keep borrowing, and whether future share sales by insiders could unsettle the stock again.
For now, SpaceX is benefiting from one of the strongest displays of investor demand in recent memory. The challenge will be proving that abundant access to capital can translate into durable returns — and that a company can remain a market darling even after the first rush of excitement fades.
