A Blockbuster Debut Turns Into a Bigger Test
Three days after its record-breaking initial public offering, SpaceX is no longer merely the biggest listing Wall Street has seen. It has become a referendum on how far investors are willing to stretch conventional ideas of valuation in pursuit of Elon Musk’s next promise.
The company’s shares, which surged 19 percent in their Nasdaq debut on Friday to about $160.95, continued climbing in premarket trading on Monday, pushing SpaceX’s market capitalization above $2 trillion. At that level, the rocket and satellite company briefly stood among America’s most valuable corporations, near Amazon and above Broadcom, despite generating a fraction of their revenue and remaining unprofitable on a consolidated basis.
The speed of that ascent has sharpened a question that hovered over the offering from the start: Are investors buying a business, or a set of Musk-led possibilities that may take years, if ever, to materialize?
By one widely cited measure, the gap is stark. SpaceX generated roughly $18.7 billion in revenue, according to reporting ahead of the listing, implying a price-to-revenue ratio above 100 at current levels. For many analysts, that is less a sign of ordinary exuberance than of a market assigning enormous value to optionality — the chance that SpaceX might dominate not only launch services and satellite internet, but also businesses that are still speculative.
The Moonshot Premium
The company’s equity story now rests on three broad pillars: its launch and space systems business, Starlink’s connectivity network, and an artificial intelligence operation added after the February 2026 merger with xAI. Of those, reporting before the IPO suggested that Starlink was the only clearly profit-making segment.
That has not stopped investors from imagining much more. The company has pitched ambitions that range from orbital AI data centers to lunar and Mars settlement concepts, ideas that carry the Musk imprint of audacity but also depend on unproven technology, undeveloped markets and enormous capital needs.
Some market veterans argue that SpaceX does not need to realize every grand ambition to justify at least part of its valuation. But even bullish observers have suggested the company must deliver on at least two of its three major bets to support the current price.
For now, the market appears willing to suspend disbelief. The debut has also further enriched Mr. Musk, whose holdings in SpaceX and Tesla have lifted his net worth past the trillion-dollar mark, according to estimates circulating after the listing.
A Tiny Float, a Big Signal
Part of the drama may be mechanical as much as fundamental.
SpaceX sold 555,555,555 shares at an expected offering price of $135, raising about $75 billion in the largest U.S. IPO on record. But as with many hot offerings, the amount of stock actually available to trade publicly remains relatively limited compared with the company’s total value. That small float can magnify price swings, particularly when demand is concentrated among retail traders, momentum funds and institutions under pressure not to miss a landmark deal.
Analysts have warned that early trading may also be supported by technical factors, including stabilization activity tied to the greenshoe option and expectations that major stock indexes will eventually add the company. Those dynamics can create a self-reinforcing rise in the days after a listing, even before the harder work of proving the valuation begins.
That distinction matters because the company is now being judged against the largest firms in America, not against the standards usually applied to a newly public growth company. At more than $2 trillion, SpaceX is no longer priced as an emerging success story. It is priced as a future infrastructure giant.
Spillovers Across Wall Street — and Beyond It
The aftershocks have spread well beyond SpaceX itself.
In the run-up to the IPO, traders unable to buy the shares directly flocked to “proxy” trades — stocks and exchange-traded funds seen as indirect ways to benefit from the company’s rise or from a broader boom in space-related investing. After the actual shares began trading, many of those proxies fell sharply, with options activity retreating as investors rotated into the real thing.
That unwind has become a reminder of how a single marquee listing can reorder whole corners of the market. Space-sector peers that had rallied in sympathy suddenly faced selling pressure. Funds built around the commercialization of space also came under strain as investors reassessed whether they wanted thematic exposure or direct ownership.
At the same time, SpaceX’s debut threw an unusual spotlight on a parallel ecosystem that has been developing outside traditional exchanges: blockchain-based and crypto-linked trading venues offering tokenized or perpetual-style products tied to private or newly public companies.
Those products gave some traders a form of around-the-clock price exposure to SpaceX before and around the listing, and their pricing reportedly tracked the public stock more closely than many skeptics expected. For advocates of such platforms, that was proof that crypto market structure can provide early price discovery and access where traditional markets cannot. For critics, it was another sign that speculative energy is escaping the boundaries Wall Street has historically imposed.
Either way, the IPO has accelerated a debate already underway in finance: whether future blockbuster listings will be shaped not only by banks and exchanges, but also by 24/7 markets operating on blockchain rails.
The Google Connection, and the Next IPO Wave
The moment has also highlighted how deeply SpaceX is now woven into the power structure of modern technology. The company’s longstanding, sometimes complicated ties to Google have drawn renewed attention as both businesses benefited from the market’s embrace of giant, infrastructure-heavy bets on the future.
More broadly, bankers and venture investors are watching SpaceX’s reception for clues about what may come next. If public investors are willing to grant a company with relatively modest current revenue a valuation above $2 trillion on the strength of dominant positioning and long-dated promise, it could embolden other highly valued private firms — including major artificial intelligence companies — to test the market.
That is one reason the current rally matters beyond Mr. Musk and beyond space. The listing is being treated as a gauge of what public markets will reward in 2026: profits, revenue scale and near-term visibility, or scarcity, narrative and founder-driven ambition.
What Investors Are Really Pricing In
For all the euphoria, the central uncertainty has not changed. Can SpaceX grow fast enough, and execute broadly enough, to justify a valuation usually reserved for the most entrenched and profitable companies in the world?
The answer depends in part on whether investors believe Starlink can mature into a global communications powerhouse, whether launch economics can keep improving, and whether the company’s AI and orbital-computing ambitions evolve from story lines into businesses. It also depends on how the stock behaves once the frenzy of the first few sessions subsides and a wider shareholder base begins to form.
For now, the market has delivered its verdict with unusual force: SpaceX is not being valued for what it is, but for what it might become.
That may be the purest expression yet of the Musk trade — and the clearest sign of how much of Wall Street is still willing to bet on the moon.
