China’s Industrial Push Is Becoming a Global One
For years, China’s rise as a manufacturing power was often described in terms of scale, speed and low cost. Now, a different picture is coming into focus: China is increasingly exporting not just products, but indispensable technology.
That shift was underscored this week across a range of industries. Uber and the Chinese autonomous-driving company Pony.ai said they would work toward deploying 2,000 robotaxis in Europe. Air China began the first regular international service for the C919, China’s homegrown passenger jet, on the Beijing-to-Ulaanbaatar route. And in semiconductors, Yangtze Memory Technologies Co., or YMTC, moved into the top ranks of global NAND flash shipments, according to Counterpoint Research.
Taken together, the developments suggest that China’s industrial advance is no longer confined to churning out the world’s goods more cheaply. It is increasingly supplying the technological building blocks that foreign companies, including some of the world’s largest, find difficult to ignore.
From batteries and electric-vehicle systems to memory chips, autonomous-driving software and commercial aircraft, Chinese companies are pushing outward from the shelter of a huge domestic market into sectors that were once dominated by American, European, South Korean and Japanese rivals.
Global Companies Are Adjusting
The change is especially visible in the choices being made by multinational companies.
Ford is moving ahead with plans to make batteries in the United States using technology licensed from CATL, the Chinese battery giant, a sign of how difficult it has become to compete in electric vehicles without drawing on Chinese know-how. Apple, facing supply pressure in components, has explored Chinese memory sourcing. Even companies wary of geopolitical blowback are being forced to weigh political risk against technological necessity.
That tension helps explain why Chinese technology is gaining traction even as Washington and European capitals talk more insistently about reducing dependence on China.
The old assumption was that foreign firms could preserve a comfortable lead in high-value technology while using China largely as a factory floor. Increasingly, that division is breaking down. In a growing number of sectors, China is no longer just a place where products are assembled. It is becoming the place where some of the core technology is cheapest, most mature or most scalable.
Europe as a Test for Chinese Autonomy
The partnership between Uber and Pony.ai offers one of the clearest examples of that transition.
The companies are expanding a European robotaxi effort that began commercial service in Zagreb in April, alongside the mobility platform Verne. Their new goal — thousands of vehicles — reflects a central reality of the robotaxi business: fleet size matters. Without enough vehicles on the road, companies struggle to spread development costs, gather data and prove that autonomous systems can work reliably in messy real-world conditions.
For Chinese autonomous-driving companies, Europe presents both an opportunity and a test. China’s domestic market has given firms like Pony.ai years of road data, engineering experience and cost discipline. But scaling abroad means navigating local regulations, labor concerns and public scrutiny over safety.
It also comes at a delicate political moment. European governments have grown more cautious about Chinese influence in strategic industries, even as they seek innovation and investment. A successful robotaxi rollout would show that Chinese self-driving technology can travel. A troubled one would reinforce the argument that geopolitical and regulatory barriers, not just technical ones, could limit China’s reach.
China’s EV Market Is Still the Engine
Much of this outward push is being powered by China’s domestic market, which remains unmatched in depth and intensity.
Latest industry data showed new-energy vehicles — a category that includes battery-electric and plug-in hybrid cars — accounting for roughly two-thirds of China’s passenger-car retail sales in July, even as the broader auto market remained soft. That level of adoption has turned China into the world’s largest proving ground for EV manufacturing, battery deployment, charging infrastructure and in-car software.
The scale matters. It gives Chinese automakers and suppliers a testing environment that few competitors can match, allowing them to refine products quickly, lower costs and build up supply chains. It also creates pressure on foreign automakers operating in China, many of which have seen their market positions erode as domestic brands improve.
Tesla’s Model Y remains popular in China, but the broader story is that local companies have become formidable across price points. That has implications far beyond China’s borders. The battery chemistry, software integration and cost structures honed in the Chinese market are increasingly shaping what global carmakers can offer elsewhere.
A New Place in the Chip Hierarchy
Semiconductors, long considered one of China’s vulnerabilities, are showing similar signs of change, though with important caveats.
YMTC’s rise into the global top three for NAND flash shipments in the second quarter of 2026 is a notable milestone in a segment critical to data storage in smartphones, laptops, servers and artificial-intelligence systems. Demand for memory has been buoyed by the broader AI boom, which has benefited both NAND and DRAM makers.
The achievement does not necessarily mean that YMTC has established a durable or more profitable lead over rivals such as Micron or Kioxia. Shipment gains can be influenced by pricing, inventory cycles and customer mix. And China’s chip sector still faces export controls and equipment restrictions that could complicate future advances.
Still, the result is symbolically and commercially important. It suggests that in at least some parts of the semiconductor business, Chinese firms are no longer simply catching up at the margins. They are becoming large enough to alter the global competitive balance.
From Viral Robots to Real Businesses
The same question now hangs over Chinese robotics: can impressive engineering become sustainable business?
Unitree, the Chinese robotics company known for agile machines capable of stunts like backflips, is preparing for a Shanghai initial public offering that investors are treating as a referendum of sorts on the commercial promise of humanoid and advanced robots. China has become adept at producing eye-catching demonstrations, and official support for robotics remains strong. But a harder question is whether customers will pay enough, and often enough, to justify the capital pouring into the field.
That uncertainty is not unique to China. Robotics companies worldwide are struggling to prove business models in areas that are technologically exciting but commercially immature. Yet China’s advantage, again, is scale: a dense manufacturing ecosystem, government backing and a domestic market willing to absorb experimentation.
If investors embrace Unitree’s listing, it could signal confidence that Chinese robotics firms can do more than generate spectacle. If they do not, it may show that even in a favored strategic sector, enthusiasm has limits when profits remain distant.
The C919’s Symbolic Takeoff
In aviation, the breakthrough is less about immediate market share than about national ambition.
Air China’s launch of regular international service for the C919 on the Beijing-Ulaanbaatar route marks the first time China’s narrow-body jet has entered scheduled cross-border commercial operation. For COMAC, the state-backed planemaker behind the aircraft, the flight is a milestone in its effort to challenge the decades-old duopoly of Boeing and Airbus.
The significance is partly symbolic. China has long wanted a homegrown passenger jet that could reduce reliance on Western aerospace giants and eventually compete abroad. The C919’s international debut is evidence that this ambition is moving from political aspiration into operational reality.
But COMAC remains in the early stages of that journey. Building airplanes is only part of what makes Boeing and Airbus powerful. They also have global certification relationships, maintenance networks, parts logistics and long-standing trust with airlines. COMAC still has much to prove on all those fronts, particularly outside markets that are politically friendly to Beijing.
Even so, the first international service matters because it signals that China is beginning to export one of the most complex industrial products in the world — not at global scale yet, but no longer only on paper.
Why This Matters Now
The broader significance of these developments lies in the kind of influence China is accumulating.
As the United States and Europe try to insulate critical industries from Chinese dependence, many companies are discovering that Chinese technology has become harder to replace than expected. In batteries, electric vehicles and parts of autonomy, Chinese firms often offer a mix of price, engineering maturity and manufacturing scale that competitors struggle to match. In memory chips and aviation, China is showing that it can advance even in industries long seen as difficult to penetrate.
That does not mean China’s global tech expansion is unstoppable. Politics may slow it. Export controls may bite. Overseas regulators may hesitate. Some Chinese sectors, including robotics and robotaxis, still have to prove that technical progress can translate into durable profits.
But the center of gravity has plainly shifted. The question is no longer whether China can make advanced products for itself. It is how much of the world will end up relying on Chinese technology to remain competitive.
