OpenAI Moves Aggressively to Expand Revenue and Tighten Control
OpenAI is opening a new front in the artificial intelligence race, rapidly building an advertising business inside ChatGPT while also moving to cut off a prominent coding startup from its models after that company was acquired by SpaceX.
Taken together, the decisions show an increasingly assertive company, one that is not only searching for new ways to make money from its vast consumer reach but is also willing to use its position as a leading model provider to shape the competitive landscape around it.
Its ad business inside ChatGPT has now reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, according to reporting on the company’s expansion into advertising, a striking pace for a product line introduced only months ago. At roughly the same time, OpenAI has told SpaceX that it intends to end model access for Cursor, the popular coding assistant owned by Anysphere, after Elon Musk’s rocket company completed a $60 billion acquisition of the startup.
The two developments underscore a broader shift at OpenAI. What began as a company primarily associated with breakthrough research and paid subscriptions is increasingly behaving like a platform company — one balancing growth, distribution, monetization and competitive defense all at once.
ChatGPT’s Ad Push Gains Speed
Advertising inside ChatGPT was once treated as a provocative idea, even by rivals eager to cast themselves as more restrained alternatives. But OpenAI’s early numbers suggest that the business is growing far faster than many expected.
Earlier this year, OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States. By late March, the company had said the pilot had already surpassed a $100 million annualized pace within six weeks. By April, reporting indicated that OpenAI was projecting $2.5 billion in ad revenue for 2026. Now, about 200 days after launch, the ad business has reached a $1 billion annualized run rate.
That figure does not mean OpenAI has already booked $1 billion in ad sales; annualized run rates are snapshots based on current performance, not guarantees of full-year revenue. Still, the speed of the ramp is notable. It suggests that OpenAI sees ChatGPT not just as a subscription product or enterprise software tool, but as a potentially powerful consumer media and commercial platform.
That matters because digital advertising remains one of the largest and most durable businesses on the internet. If OpenAI can hold user attention inside ChatGPT while persuading marketers that conversational interfaces can drive purchases, product discovery or brand awareness, it could begin to challenge parts of the search and advertising ecosystem long dominated by entrenched players.
Whether users will tolerate a larger ad load inside an A.I. assistant remains an open question. Search users have spent decades growing accustomed to sponsored links and commercial placements. Chatbots are newer, more intimate products, and the margin for user frustration may be lower if advertising feels intrusive or distorts answers. But for OpenAI, the commercial logic is clear: ChatGPT’s scale offers a route to revenue far beyond subscriptions alone.
Cursor Becomes a Flashpoint
At the same time, OpenAI is showing how hard-nosed it can be with companies that depend on its models.
On Aug. 28, OpenAI said it had notified SpaceX that it intended to wind down its contract supplying models to Cursor, with a proposed shutoff date of Nov. 12. The move followed SpaceX’s completion earlier this month of its acquisition of Anysphere, Cursor’s parent company, after announcing a $60 billion all-stock deal in June.
OpenAI said the acquisition triggered a contractual change-of-control provision. It also said it did not plan to provide future models to Cursor, citing accountability concerns around use of its upcoming Astra model.
Cursor has become one of the best-known A.I. coding tools, and its popularity helped illustrate a powerful dynamic in the current A.I. market: application companies could build large businesses on top of frontier models supplied by another company. But that arrangement can become unstable when the model provider and the application company drift into direct competition — or, in this case, when the application company is acquired by a rival ecosystem.
For OpenAI, the SpaceX ownership change appears to have crossed a line. Musk, who was an OpenAI co-founder and is now one of its fiercest critics, has built a competing A.I. orbit through xAI and its Grok models. SpaceX’s control of Cursor effectively places a major OpenAI customer and distribution partner inside a rival camp.
Cursor, for its part, had argued that joining SpaceX would give it access to far greater GPU capacity and allow it to build stronger in-house models. The immediate question now is how quickly it can replace OpenAI’s models with Grok or other alternatives if the cutoff proceeds on schedule.
A Warning to the A.I. Ecosystem
The clash carries implications well beyond one coding assistant.
Many fast-growing A.I. application startups depend heavily on a small set of model providers for core capabilities. That has always created a hidden vulnerability: the supplier can also be a gatekeeper, a competitor or both. OpenAI’s move against Cursor may become a case study in the risks of building a business atop infrastructure controlled by a company whose strategic interests can change abruptly.
This is especially significant in coding, one of the hottest and most commercially promising corners of generative A.I. Coding assistants are not just consumer novelties; they are emerging as foundational tools for software development inside companies. Control over those tools, and over the models that power them, is becoming a strategic asset.
OpenAI’s decision suggests that access to top-tier models may increasingly be conditioned not only on price and usage terms, but also on ownership, alignment and competitive posture. For startups and enterprise developers alike, that may sharpen interest in diversification — spreading workloads across multiple providers or investing more heavily in open-source and in-house systems.
Why This Matters Now
Both moves arrive at a moment when the A.I. industry is maturing from a period of exuberant experimentation into something more structured and more adversarial.
OpenAI is under pressure to justify immense infrastructure spending and the costs of training ever larger models. Ads offer one answer: a scalable business tied to consumer attention. At the same time, model access is emerging as a source of leverage, allowing companies like OpenAI to influence who gets to build on their technology and under what conditions.
In that sense, the ad push and the Cursor cutoff are part of the same story. OpenAI is trying to become not merely a laboratory or software vendor, but a full-spectrum platform company — one that monetizes its audience directly, protects strategic territory and decides more aggressively how its technology is distributed.
The unanswered questions are substantial. It is unclear whether ChatGPT’s ad growth will remain as rapid once the novelty fades and user scrutiny increases. It is also not yet certain whether OpenAI will follow through on the Nov. 12 cutoff, or how disruptive that break would be for Cursor and its customers.
But the direction is unmistakable. OpenAI is no longer just racing to build better A.I. models. It is moving to control the business terrain around them.
