Apple on Tuesday made one of the boldest changes to its flagship product strategy in years, unveiling its first foldable iPhone and reworking the release rhythm of its most important device line at a moment when its position in China is under unusual pressure.
At a launch event led for the first time by John Ternus, Apple’s new chief executive, the company introduced the iPhone Duo, a book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch interior display and a 5.4-inch outer screen, starting at $1,999 in the United States. It also announced the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, while signaling a broader shift in timing by holding back some lower-end iPhones until spring 2027.
The changes amount to Apple’s biggest shake-up of the iPhone playbook in roughly seven years. But even before the applause had faded, the company’s latest attempt to reignite excitement around its most lucrative product was colliding with a harder reality in China: Apple may be entering the foldable market, but it is entering late, and at a price that immediately invited comparison with cheaper devices from entrenched domestic rivals.
A premium debut meets a skeptical market
In China, online reaction to the iPhone Duo quickly centered less on the novelty of Apple finally embracing foldables than on whether the device justifies its cost. At a starting price of roughly 15,999 yuan, the Duo lands at the upper end of the market just as Chinese consumers are weighing high-end purchases more carefully and local brands are offering foldables with increasingly polished hardware at lower prices.
That has put Apple into direct comparison with Xiaomi and Huawei, which both unveiled new foldables just two days before Apple’s event. The timing sharpened the contrast. Rather than introducing a category-defining product into an open field, Apple arrived in a market where consumers had fresh alternatives in mind and where local manufacturers have years of experience refining hinges, screens and battery trade-offs.
Huawei, in particular, poses a difficult challenge. The company has regained momentum in China and now leads the country’s smartphone market overall, with unusual strength in premium devices, the very segment Apple has long relied on for growth and prestige. Xiaomi, meanwhile, has leaned into the value argument, offering foldables that many Chinese shoppers see as more attainable without appearing meaningfully compromised.
For Apple, the issue is not merely optics. Greater China accounts for about 17 percent of the company’s revenue, making the region too important for a misstep to be dismissed as a niche product problem.
Apple enters a market others built
By the time Apple introduced the Duo, foldables were no longer a futuristic experiment. Samsung and Huawei have been selling such devices since 2019, and the category’s rough edges — fragile displays, visible creases, awkward software transitions and lofty prices — have become familiar engineering challenges rather than novelties.
Apple’s long delay had fed expectations that it would use the extra time to solve some of those problems in a way that only it could. That remains part of the company’s pitch: a more mature foldable integrated into Apple’s hardware-software ecosystem, aimed at customers willing to pay for refinement rather than simply novelty.
Yet foldables remain a small slice of the global smartphone market, and analysts have long debated whether they represent a meaningful new computing form or a flashy side branch of the handset business. That ambiguity makes Apple’s move notable. The company has often preferred to enter product categories after competitors, but only when it believes it can define the premium tier and turn a niche into a profitable franchise.
The immediate question is whether the Duo is the beginning of that process or primarily a halo product meant to signal continued innovation in a mature smartphone market.
A new cadence for Apple’s most important product
The foldable launch was paired with another significant shift: Apple appears to be breaking with its longstanding habit of rolling out the bulk of its iPhone lineup in one autumn event. By introducing its premium models now and deferring some lower-end devices until next spring, Apple is testing whether a staggered schedule can smooth demand, reduce manufacturing bottlenecks and keep consumer attention focused on high-margin products for longer.
The strategy could offer practical benefits. A split release schedule may help Apple better manage supply, especially for a complex first-generation foldable that is expected to be produced in limited numbers. It could also allow the company to avoid overcrowding its own lineup, giving the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro more room to stand out.
But the change carries risks. Apple’s annual September iPhone launch has become one of the most reliable rituals in consumer electronics. Altering that cadence may create confusion among buyers accustomed to shopping all at once, while opening more space for rivals to define the conversation between product cycles.
The shift also places added symbolic weight on Ternus’s debut. Best known inside Apple as the executive who oversaw hardware engineering, he used his first showcase as chief executive to signal both continuity and disruption: maintaining Apple’s premium positioning while reshaping the timing and form of the product that still anchors the company.
Why China matters most
If there is one market likely to determine whether the Duo becomes a durable success or an expensive curiosity, it is China.
Apple’s brand there remains powerful, particularly among affluent urban consumers, and analysts still expect robust initial demand for the foldable. Some of that optimism rests on Apple’s unusually loyal customer base at the high end. Some also reflects a simpler reality: limited early supply can make even a niche product appear strongly received.
But the longer-term test is more complicated. Chinese consumers are not evaluating the Duo in isolation. They are comparing it against domestic alternatives that are cheaper, familiar and increasingly competitive on design. They are doing so in a market where national champions, especially Huawei, have become symbols not just of technology prowess but of local resilience.
That means Apple’s usual strengths — brand prestige, ecosystem loyalty and pricing power — may not be enough on their own. To win meaningful share in foldables, the company will need to persuade buyers that arriving late brought advantages worth paying for.
Whether it can do that may say as much about Apple’s future in China as it does about the foldable category itself. The iPhone Duo is Apple’s most visible attempt in years to show that the smartphone still has room for reinvention. In China, consumers are already asking a more practical question: at this price, why this one?
