Sweden’s centre-left opposition appeared on Monday to be on the cusp of returning to power after a tightly contested general election, with preliminary results showing a slender parliamentary advantage over Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing bloc and frustrating the far-right Sweden Democrats’ long-anticipated bid to enter government.

With about 95 percent of districts counted, the opposition held an estimated 176 seats to 173 for the governing side in the 349-seat Riksdag, a margin narrow enough that late-counted ballots could still alter the balance. But the early outcome suggested a notable shift in a race that had been watched across Europe as a test of whether Sweden’s far right could convert years of rising support into formal power.

Instead, the Sweden Democrats underperformed expectations, slipping from second to third place and losing support compared with the 2022 election. For a party whose growth had seemed relentless for decades, the result amounted to a check on its momentum, even if not a rejection of its influence.

The immediate beneficiary was Magdalena Andersson, the Social Democratic leader and former prime minister, who emerged in the strongest position to try to form a government if the numbers hold. Yet the path ahead remained uncertain. Sweden’s electoral system and fractured parliamentary arithmetic mean that even a three-seat edge offers no guarantee of an easy return to office.

A Win, if It Holds, With Complications

Sweden’s election-night count is preliminary, and the process unfolds in stages. Municipalities report initial results first, while late-arriving advance votes and ballots cast overseas are counted later in the week. The official Riksdag result is not expected for about a week, and the newly elected parliament is due to open on Sept. 29.

That timetable leaves room for suspense. A handful of seats can determine not only which bloc claims victory, but also who gets the first real chance to build a governing majority — or, in Sweden’s case, a workable minority tolerated by enough parties to survive a parliamentary vote.

Even if the centre-left retains its lead, Ms. Andersson faces difficult negotiations. The Centre Party, expected to play a pivotal role in any talks, has long resisted closer cooperation with the Left Party, while the Left has pressed to be included in any governing arrangement. Those tensions could complicate coalition-building and prolong bargaining over a speaker and, ultimately, a prime minister.

In remarks signaling that the election had settled little beyond the immediate arithmetic, the Centre Party made clear that potential partners would need to “see the big picture” and avoid allowing fringe forces to dictate policy.

The Sweden Democrats Are Checked, Not Defeated

The Sweden Democrats’ setback is significant largely because of how much political ground the party has covered since its founding in 1988. A movement once shunned because of its extremist roots spent years climbing from the margins to become a central force in Swedish politics.

After the 2022 election, Mr. Kristersson’s conservatives and their allies relied on the Sweden Democrats under the so-called Tidö agreement, which gave the far-right party substantial sway over immigration, policing and other policy areas without granting it cabinet posts. That arrangement also helped normalize the party in the eyes of much of the political establishment.

The result this time appears to have halted, at least temporarily, the party’s hoped-for next step: a direct role in government. But its influence has hardly vanished. On migration, crime and integration — the issues on which it built its rise — Swedish politics has already shifted markedly. Mainstream parties, including those outside the right, have adopted tougher language and stricter proposals over the past decade.

That is why the election can be read in two ways at once: as a setback for the far right’s immediate ambitions, and as proof of how deeply it has already shaped the national agenda.

A Signal Beyond Sweden

The Swedish result is likely to resonate beyond the country’s borders because it interrupts, or at least complicates, a broader European narrative of far-right advance. In recent years, anti-immigration and nationalist parties have made gains across the continent, and Sweden’s election had drawn heightened attention as another possible milestone.

Instead, the outcome suggested that the rise of such parties is not uniform or inevitable. The Sweden Democrats remain one of Sweden’s largest parties and a major parliamentary force, but their failure to break through into government now comes at a moment when similar parties elsewhere have been gaining ground.

For Europe’s centre-left and liberal parties, that offers a measure of encouragement. For Sweden, it offers less clarity than the raw seat tally might suggest.

What Comes Next

The coming days will determine whether the opposition’s lead survives the full count. If it does, attention will shift quickly from ballots to bargaining: who can assemble enough support, which parties are willing to tolerate one another, and what policy concessions will be required to form a government.

A return of Ms. Andersson would mark a political reversal after four years in which Mr. Kristersson governed with the backing of the far right. But the likely lesson of the election is not that Sweden has neatly turned the page. Rather, voters appear to have denied the Sweden Democrats the breakthrough they wanted while leaving behind a parliament almost perfectly split — and a political landscape still shaped by the forces that brought the far right to the threshold of power in the first place.
