Trump Rejects Iran Strait Offer, Sending Oil Higher

Oil prices climbed and fears of a wider regional conflict deepened on Monday after President Trump rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within a week, hardening a standoff that has unsettled global energy markets and stirred new anxiety from the Persian Gulf to Yemen and Britain.

The proposal, conveyed through Qatari mediation during last week’s United Nations General Assembly meetings, was presented by Tehran as a possible path to de-escalation: reopen the strategic waterway, resume broader talks and ease the immediate risk of confrontation. But Mr. Trump and senior administration officials said Iran was demanding too much too soon, including sweeping sanctions relief and other concessions before any durable agreement was in place.

“They were asking for everything up front,” Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said in remarks that echoed the president’s rejection over the weekend.

The collapse of even a tentative opening to calm the crisis immediately rippled through oil markets. Brent crude rose about 3 percent intraday on Monday as traders bet that disruption around Hormuz — one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints — could last longer than many had hoped.

A chokepoint with global reach

The Strait of Hormuz, the narrow passage linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, carries a significant share of the world’s seaborne oil. Any threat to shipping there tends to reverberate far beyond the Middle East, affecting fuel costs, inflation expectations and the calculations of central banks and governments already grappling with fragile growth.

That is why the failure of the latest proposal mattered so quickly. Middle East crude exports have rebounded this month to roughly 12.8 million barrels a day, according to Reuters, and shipments through Hormuz had shown signs of recovery. But the market response on Monday suggested that traders do not believe those gains are secure while diplomacy remains uncertain and military risks persist.

For the Trump administration, the central question appears to be whether Iran is seeking a genuine off-ramp or using the urgency of global oil markets to win relief from pressure without making lasting commitments on its nuclear program and regional conduct. Mr. Trump said he still expected indirect contacts to continue this week, even after dismissing Tehran’s latest offer.

Iran, for its part, has sent conflicting messages. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Tehran was prepared for a “doomsday” war if fighting resumed, while also insisting that diplomacy remained the only way out of the impasse. On Monday, Iranian officials publicly denied that any new negotiations with Washington were planned, undercutting Mr. Trump’s suggestion that talks could resume quickly.

Mixed signals, rising risks

Those contradictory statements have become a defining feature of the crisis: threats severe enough to keep military planners and energy traders on edge, paired with just enough diplomatic language to preserve the possibility of back-channel engagement.

Iran’s navy said it was analyzing data from a captured American underwater drone, a reminder that the confrontation at sea is unfolding not only through tanker traffic and naval patrols but also through intelligence and surveillance operations that can easily become flash points.

The White House has framed its pressure campaign as necessary to force Tehran into a more comprehensive settlement. But with neither side appearing ready to make the first politically costly concession, the risk is that events on the ground — or at sea — could dictate the next move before diplomats do.

That danger is heightened by the number of arenas in which tensions are now playing out.

The crisis spreads beyond the Gulf

In Yemen, renewed fighting between the Iran-aligned Houthis and Saudi-backed Yemeni forces has shattered much of the uneasy calm that had largely held since the United Nations-mediated cease-fire in 2022. This month’s Houthi offensives have reportedly displaced more than 130,000 people, and weekend exchanges involving Houthi attacks and Saudi interceptions underscored how quickly the conflict can feed into broader concerns about shipping and regional security.

The stakes are not only humanitarian, though they are starkly so. If the Yemen fighting expands toward the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait, it could compound the pressure already centered on Hormuz, threatening another vital maritime corridor for global commerce.

In Britain, counterterrorism police are investigating whether an apparent bomb plot near RAF Fairford — a Royal Air Force base used for American operations against Iran — may have had an Iranian link. No public conclusion has been reached, and the inquiry remains at an early stage. But the investigation has added another layer of concern among Western officials who fear that the confrontation with Tehran could spill into covert or proxy operations far from the Gulf.

Why this moment matters

The immediate issue is whether Washington and Tehran can still find a formula to reduce the danger around Hormuz before a military incident or political miscalculation closes the window for talks altogether.

But the broader significance lies in how interconnected the crisis has become. What began as a dispute over sanctions, shipping and Iran’s regional posture is now influencing global oil prices, threatening to worsen inflation, intensifying war in Yemen and prompting security scrutiny in Europe.

The uncertainty is compounded by politics on both sides. Mr. Trump, entering a tense midterm season, has shown little appetite for appearing to yield under pressure.
