BP was plunged into fresh turmoil on Tuesday after its board abruptly removed the company’s chairman, Albert Manifold, citing “serious concerns” over governance standards, oversight and conduct — only for Mr. Manifold to publicly reject the company’s account a day later and accuse the board of ousting him without warning.

The clash has opened a damaging new front for one of Europe’s largest energy companies at a precarious moment, with BP already in the midst of a leadership reshuffle and a strategic recalibration intended to restore investor confidence after a period of underperformance.

BP said its board had unanimously decided to remove Mr. Manifold with immediate effect. Amanda Blanc, the senior independent director, said the board regarded the issues as unacceptable. The company appointed Ian Tyler as interim chairman while it begins a search for a permanent replacement.

Investors reacted swiftly. BP shares fell after the announcement, reflecting concern not only about the sudden loss of the chairman but also about what remains unknown: the company has not publicly detailed the allegations that led to its decision.
