The semiconductor boom delivered both a reassurance and a warning this week
The frenzy surrounding artificial intelligence chips offered investors two sharply different signals in Asia on Monday: a powerful reminder that demand for the hardware behind the AI build-out is still translating into real sales, and a fresh indication that markets may be growing less forgiving about how much future growth is already priced in.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a linchpin of the global AI supply chain, reported June revenue of NT$442.68 billion, a rise of 67.9 percent from a year earlier. The figure pushed first-half revenue to NT$2.404 trillion, up 35.6 percent, and implied record second-quarter revenue of about NT$1.27 trillion, according to Reuters calculations — slightly ahead of market expectations and another sign that spending on advanced chips remains intense.
At nearly the same moment, SK Hynix, the South Korean memory-chip giant whose high-bandwidth memory has become essential for training and running AI models, suffered a jarring reversal. After a blockbuster Nasdaq debut last week that sent its shares up 12.8 percent and helped raise roughly $26.5 billion, the company’s Seoul-listed stock fell more than 15 percent, its worst day in years.
Taken together, the moves captured the increasingly uneasy balance at the heart of the AI trade. The underlying business remains strong, even exuberant. But the stocks tied most closely to that boom are proving far more volatile as investors debate whether today’s breakneck spending can continue long enough to justify soaring valuations.
Strong demand, tangible sales
TSMC’s latest revenue figures are likely to reassure investors who have been searching for evidence that AI enthusiasm is not merely speculative. The company manufactures advanced chips for many of the industry’s most important customers, including Nvidia and Apple, and has become one of the clearest windows into actual semiconductor demand.
Earlier this year, TSMC said high-performance computing — the category that includes AI-related chips — accounted for 61 percent of first-quarter revenue. Its chief executive said in June that the company was working to avoid becoming a bottleneck as AI adoption spread beyond big tech companies into enterprises, consumer products and even government-backed, or “sovereign,” AI projects.
That broadening demand matters. For months, investors have wrestled with whether the AI boom is concentrated in a narrow group of companies racing to build data centers, or whether it is expanding into a deeper and more durable technology cycle. TSMC’s numbers suggest that, for now, orders for leading-edge manufacturing remain robust enough to keep revenue growing at a blistering pace.
The company’s earnings call on July 16 is now likely to be watched even more closely for clues on how long that momentum can last, whether pricing remains firm and how much capacity can be added without upsetting the delicate balance between shortage and oversupply.
SK Hynix’s whipsaw exposes market nerves
If TSMC’s update spoke to operating strength, SK Hynix’s wild trading revealed how fragile investor sentiment has become.
SK Hynix has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI build-out because it is a leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, the specialized memory stacked inside AI accelerators. Those components have become critical for Nvidia’s graphics processing units and other chips used to train large language models and run AI applications. The company’s chairman said recently that demand remained “enormous,” reflecting a broader industry view that supply for the most advanced memory is still tight.
Its U.S. listing had been treated as a triumph. The offering was heavily oversubscribed, and the company moved to tap the richer valuations often awarded to semiconductor groups in American markets while raising capital for expansion, including new factories and planned investment in the United States.
But the speed of the retreat in Seoul suggested that even the biggest AI winners are vulnerable to abrupt reversals. Some of the decline appeared tied to listing mechanics and profit-taking after a huge run-up in the stock over the past year. A premium that opened between the newly listed U.S. shares and the home-market stock may also have begun to close. Yet the size of the fall rattled investors well beyond one company, helping to weigh on broader market sentiment in Asia and in futures trading elsewhere.
A market searching for the limits of the AI build-out
The semiconductor sector has become the market’s clearest expression of faith in AI, but it is now being pulled by two opposing forces.
On one side are company executives and supply-chain data showing that spending on AI infrastructure remains aggressive. Demand for advanced logic chips, HBM and the equipment needed to produce both has so far held up better than many skeptics expected. Some industry executives have gone so far as to describe demand as nearly unlimited, even as corporate customers push harder to extract value from earlier AI investments.
On the other side is a growing concern among investors that the trade has become crowded. As market values have climbed, the burden of proof has grown heavier. Any sign of normalization — whether slower capital spending, easing memory shortages or less urgency from cloud companies — could trigger sharp repricing in stocks that have been treated as near-certain winners.
That tension is especially acute for companies like SK Hynix, whose fortunes are tied not just to AI adoption, but to a product category where supply shortages and pricing power may eventually ease. It is also relevant for TSMC, whose commanding role in the industry gives it unusual visibility but also places it at the center of questions about how quickly customers can absorb all the capacity now being built.
Why this matters now
For much of the past year, the AI-chip rally has looked almost one-directional. This week’s split-screen view suggested a more complicated phase may be beginning.
TSMC’s surging sales indicate that the physical build-out of AI infrastructure is still very much underway. Data centers are still being filled with new processors and memory, and the companies at the heart of that supply chain are still booking the revenue to prove it.
But SK Hynix’s violent swing served as a reminder that markets are no longer rewarding the AI story automatically. Investors want evidence that growth can persist, that new listings and lofty valuations can be sustained, and that today’s spending surge will evolve into a durable market rather than a short-lived scramble for capacity.
The next test is close at hand. When TSMC reports full quarterly earnings this week, investors will be looking beyond the headline numbers for something harder to measure: whether the industry’s most important manufacturer still sees an AI boom that is expanding — or one that is starting, however subtly, to meet its first limits.
