The retreat in AI stocks spread from Wall Street to Asia
The sell-off that began in American chip stocks late last week rippled across Asian markets on Monday, dragging down many of the companies that had become central to the global artificial intelligence boom and sharpening doubts about how much longer investors will reward even the biggest winners with ever-richer valuations.
Technology shares in Asia tracked overnight losses in the United States, where a sharp reversal in semiconductor stocks erased more than $1 trillion in market value on Friday and sent the Nasdaq down 4.2 percent. In South Korea, the KOSPI at one point tumbled 8 percent, enough to trigger a 20-minute trading halt. Japan’s Nikkei fell roughly 3.5 percent, while SoftBank, the Japanese investment giant closely associated with big bets on future technology platforms, dropped about 6.8 percent.
The declines broadened a retreat that had initially centered on U.S. chipmakers. By Monday, investors were also pulling back from a wider range of AI-linked names, from semiconductor suppliers and infrastructure plays to global technology groups seen as beneficiaries of the race to build out computing capacity.
Later in the day, U.S. stock futures steadied, and shares of Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron recovered some ground in premarket trading. But the rebound did little to ease a larger concern hanging over markets: whether one of this year’s most powerful trades is shifting from indiscriminate enthusiasm to a far more demanding test of earnings, spending plans and price.
Broadcom became the catalyst for a market already priced for perfection
The immediate trigger for the reversal was Broadcom’s earnings reaction. After reporting results on June 4, the company’s shares fell more than 14 percent as investors fixated less on the strength of AI demand than on what management did not deliver: a meaningful increase to long-term targets and guidance that clearly surpassed lofty expectations.
Broadcom’s report was important because the company had come to symbolize the next layer of the AI trade beyond Nvidia. Its custom chips and networking products are viewed as critical to the build-out of AI infrastructure by large cloud companies. But with expectations running so high, even solid numbers proved insufficient. The company reiterated, rather than raised, its 2027 AI revenue target, and its forecast for current-quarter AI chip sales came in slightly below what Wall Street had hoped for.
That was enough to puncture a market setup many strategists had described as “priced for perfection.” The PHLX semiconductor index, despite Friday’s plunge, remained up about 75 percent for the year — a measure of just how powerful the rally had been before momentum turned.
A concentrated trade met a harsher macro backdrop
The speed of the retreat reflected not only disappointment with one earnings report, but also the fragility of a market that had become heavily concentrated in a relatively small group of AI favorites. Semiconductor makers and related infrastructure companies in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan had absorbed a disproportionate share of investor enthusiasm, leaving them vulnerable to a synchronized unwind once confidence faltered.
At the same time, the macroeconomic backdrop has become less forgiving. A strong U.S. jobs report for May pushed up expectations that the Federal Reserve might still have room to raise interest rates later in 2026, or at least keep policy tighter for longer than investors had anticipated. That is especially painful for growth stocks, whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings and are therefore more sensitive to higher bond yields.
Oil prices, meanwhile, rose as renewed fighting in the Middle East added to inflation concerns. For investors, that combination — stronger economic data, higher energy prices and the prospect of tighter monetary policy — has been enough to challenge the argument that AI-related companies can continue to command premium valuations regardless of broader market conditions.
Signs of rising anxiety were visible in options markets as well. The CBOE Volatility Index, or VIX, Wall Street’s so-called fear gauge, climbed to a two-week high on Friday, catching up with stress signals that had already begun to appear in other volatility measures.
What investors are trying to determine now
The central question is whether the pullback amounts to a healthy correction after an extraordinary run or the beginning of a more consequential re-rating of AI-linked equities around the world.
For now, investors are looking beyond the headline drop in stock prices to several tests that could shape the next phase of the trade. One is inflation data in the United States, which could either reinforce or soften expectations for higher interest rates. Another is the path of Treasury yields, which has become increasingly important for richly valued technology companies.
Just as important is whether spending on AI infrastructure by cloud providers and large enterprises remains robust. The giant investments announced over the past year helped justify the surge in chip stocks and related names. If those commitments hold, the latest retreat may come to be seen as a positioning washout after a market got too crowded. If they begin to slow, even modestly, investors may conclude that the sector’s most expensive companies had run too far ahead of underlying demand.
There is also a growing concern that a busy calendar of large capital raises and high-profile offerings in technology-adjacent sectors could siphon liquidity from existing market leaders, making it harder for the same handful of companies to keep attracting fresh money at previous rates.
Why this matters beyond one bad day for chips
The importance of the sell-off lies in what it says about a market narrative that has dominated global equities for much of the year. The AI boom has been powerful enough to lift major indexes, shape fund flows and create a hierarchy of winners across continents. When the trade weakens, the effects do not stay confined to one or two chip stocks.
Monday’s moves suggested that investors are beginning to separate the long-term promise of artificial intelligence from the near-term pricing of the companies building it. That is a meaningful shift. For much of the rally, momentum itself helped sustain higher prices; now, the market appears to be asking whether future revenue, margins and capital spending can justify the premiums embedded in those shares.
The answer will not come in a single session. But after months in which AI enthusiasm seemed capable of overpowering nearly every other market force, the latest rout offered a reminder that even the most celebrated trade can become vulnerable when expectations rise faster than the evidence needed to support them.
